Introduction
The Tonkinese is a cross between the Siamese and Burmese cat breeds, and they are loved for their beautiful looks as well as their playful personalities. With pale bodies, dark “points” on the head, legs, and tail, and stunning blue, gold, or aquamarine eyes, the Tonkinese has inherited the “classic” colourings of its parent breeds along with their intelligence and charm.
History
It’s believed that the Tonkinese mix may have existed naturally as far back as the early 1800s, but intentional cross-breeding between the Siamese and Burmese began in earnest in the early 1900s in North America, and by the early 2000s, the Tonkinese was no longer considered a crossbreed, but an established breed in its own right.
Personality
The Tonkinese is an intelligent, playful, affectionate, and very people-oriented cat that like its ancestors can be a bit of a chatterbox. Always interested in what’s going on, they will voice their opinion on daily events as they follow their people from room to room, but they’re always happy to settle in for a cuddle when the opportunity arises.
