The Somali is an energetic and inquisitive breed that never misses a trick. Always alert and looking for entertainment, they are not only beautiful to look at, but also great fun to share a home with.
History
The exact origins of the Somali are uncertain, but it’s believed to have descended from the long-haired Abyssinian which has ancestry dating back to at least 900 BC. In the 1960s, a breeder of Abyssinian cats in the United States chose to develop the long-haired or “fuzzy” coat gene appearing in some kittens. The resulting semi-longhaired version became known as the Somali, and by the 1990s was recognised as a separate breed.
Personality
The Somali loves to be involved in everything that’s going on and they’re also known to enjoy having “conversations” with their people. They prefer to have company and will bond strongly with a sibling or another cat, thriving in a home environment where they’re not left alone. As well as clowning around and making games out of everything, they are happy to be adored and pampered by their people and will snuggle up for cuddles when the mood takes them.
