Introduction
The Siberian is a good-looking cat with a good-natured personality to match. They look big and powerful, and they’re certainly athletic and agile enough to make big jumps, but the biggest thing about these gorgeous, fluffy cats is their purr.
History
Written records of Siberian cats date back to the 13th century, but it’s believed this ancient breed’s origins stretch back as far as 1000 AD. Native to Russia, the Siberian is a landrace breed, meaning it has evolved naturally without human intervention, and therefore today’s cats have remained very similar in appearance to their ancient ancestors. Once only seen in Siberian forests, they gradually made their way into towns, becoming feral street cats that hung around market places. With their gorgeous looks, it was only a matter of time before townsfolk were inviting them into their homes, but it was late in the 19th century before they made an appearance in other countries.
Personality
The Siberian is an energetic and intelligent cat that likes to be busy, when they’re not snoozing. They are known to be great climbers and jumpers, and they’re very playful, meaning they do well in an environment where they have space to come and go as they please, but they can adapt to indoor living if given enough mental stimulation. With big paws and big hearts, Siberians are fun-loving and patient characters, making them lovely companions and family pets.
