Introduction
One of the first things that you’ll notice about a Selkirk Rex is its trademark coat. These cats have a gorgeous coat, which is soft, fluffy and full of delicate little curls. Their playful appearance is certainly matched by their personality, too. Selkirk Rex cats are notoriously playful - these energetic cats are a curly ball of fun.
Did you know? Selkirk Rex cats come in two varieties - long hair and short hair. Those with a longer hair can be seen sporting a longer (and even curlier) ruff about the neck, and a slightly wilder-looking tail.
History
Selkirk Rex cats originally come from Montana, in America.
The first members of this cat breed actually came as a result of an unexpected and naturally occurring genetic trait. The breed was then developed by breeders, and this defining trait was encouraged until a species was formed.
The first member of the Selkirk Rex cat breed was identified by Jeri Newman. She then worked to promote the new breed. In fact, it was Newman who decided on the breed’s name, which she dedicated to her stepfather. This makes the Selkirk Rex cats the only breed of cat to have been named after a human.
Personality
Selkirk Rex are chilled out and cuddly cats, which makes them a lovely addition to a family home. When they’re not cosying up to you on the sofa, Selkirk Rex are almost child-like in their playfulness. They are utterly entertained by toys, and their particular favourites are often dangly games, like a piece of string with a ball attached to the end. This will keep them occupied for ages.
