Introduction

The Traditional Persian is the name for a group of Persian like cats that existed before selective breeding affected the breed in a substantial way. First imported to Europe in the 1600s they are a gentle and handsome breed.

History

Originating from Iran the Persian cat was first imported into Italy in the 1620s before slowly bing imported and making their homes across the rest of Europe and into the laps of cat fanciers. This version of the Persian was shown at England's first organised cat show in Crystal Palace in 1871. After this event breeders and showers began trying to differentiate the breed from the Angora as the two were very similar breeds. The breed standards were released in 1889 however they weren't taken very well with cat fanciers who didn't like distinguishing between the two breeds.

Personality

They are serene and gentle cats with calm personalities. While they need mental and physical enrichment to reduce the likelihood of boredom based behaviours, they would much rather be resting on the sofa than chasing around the house. Traditional Persians may get along with children as long as the children as long as the children have been taught to respect cats and they do not play rough and tumble with the cats. Tea parties and reading to the cats are much preferred over any more rambunctious games. They are happy to spend time alone and are not overly reliant on their owners. Traditional Persians do get on with other animals, including cat friendly dogs, however owners with small mammals, birds, and lizards, need to supervise any interactions those animals have with the traditional Persian. They are not very vocal and much prefer to let their eyes and body language talk for them.
