Closely related to the Siamese, the Oriental Longhair and the Oriental Bicolour, the Oriental Shorthair is a vocal and extroverted cat that likes to be with their families. They can be very playful and will happily stay active as they get into adulthood.

Oriental Shorthair is a name that relates to a group of cats that found its beginnings in the Siamese breed. Originally from Siam (modern day Thailand) the breed was imported and subsequently developed in the UK in the 1800s. These cats became the basis for a lot of breeds when mixed with breeds like the Havana Brown cats and the Korat cat. The breed was officially registered for competitions in the US in 1977 with UK registries accepting the breed in 1997. Other international and world registries don't accept this breed as they are similar to other breeds and are very close to the Siamese and Oriental Bicolour, some competitions will only let the Oriental Shorthair to participate as Siamese cats.

They enjoy homes where they can be the centre of attention and get on well with humans and other animals, especially other cats and cat friendly dogs. They get along well with all age children as long as the children are taught how to respect and interact with cats, otherwise accidental injuries may result. One of the most notable characteristics of this breed is their "honk"- a type of vocalisation that sounds like a horn honk. They enjoy having "conversations" with their humans and may vocalise as a way to get attention. They need a good amount of physical and mental stimulation to make sure that they don't develop boredom based problem behaviours. They enjoy solo or interactive play, but may well prefer interactive play with their family.
