A handsome breed, the Oriental longhair is a domestic breed with close links to the Oriental Shorthair and the Oriental Bicolour. Lively and extraverted these cats enjoy human company and are "into everything" and want to know what's going on.

Oriental longhairs were initially imported from places like Turkey in the 19th century to places like the UK. Unfortunately the breed disappeared in the 1900s in favour of Persian cats and it took breeders in the UK to bring the breed back. Breeders in the UK took Abyssinian cats and Siamese cats to get the correct group of genetics to make the correct fur length and body shape that had been desired. Cats of these breed stocks were eventually exported around other parts of the world like the USA and Canada. Known originally the breed was known as the British Angora before the breed was renamed in 2002. The change was done to reduce the confusion between the Oriental Longhair and the Turkish Angora. In other places in Europe the breed is in fact known as the Javanese cat.

They are best suited for homes and famillies where they will have lots of attention, these cats make great family pets. Oriental Longhairs are happy with children and cat friendly dogs, however to reduce the possibility of accidental injuries, children need to be taught how to respect and interact calmly with the cat. Oriental Longhairs also get on well with other cats! They can be very talkative and enjoy having "conversations" with the people in their home. This breed may also follow owners and act as "shadows", wanting to be involved in everything that their human is doing. They are active and playful and do well with individual or interactive play, but generally prefer interactive play with their owners. Because of their energetic and extroverted nature they need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to make sure they don't display boredom based behaviours.
