Introduction
Lykois are by far one of the most recent breeds in the world and have only been around since 2011. People are freaking out about this breed, mainly because the aesthetic is not far off being a werewolf-like cat. Even the name ‘Lykoi’ means ‘wolves’ in Greek, of which it gets its name. Nowadays, the popularity of the Lykoi is certainly taking off, and we’re excited to see where it goes over the next few years.
History
The Lykoi breed first appeared back in 2010 when a breeder by the name of Patti Thomas from Virginia, bred two domestic shorthairs with the Lykoi gene. A second pair with the Lykoi gene was discovered by Johnny Gobble from Tennessee a year later, and so the breeding of this breed commenced.
Only one year later, in 2012, did the breed go for registration to the International Cat Association, in which is passed with the registration only status, although now this breed is recognised with its full championship status, which is crazy fast compared to some other well-known breeds, considering how long they can take to be recognised and registered.
Personality
There’s no doubt about it that Lykois are some of the smartest cats around. They are incredibly curious and will find their way into anything they can just for the sake of exploring, and if you set them up with games or puzzles, then they’re going to love taking the time to try and figure them out.
These are another one of the unique breeds of cat you can even teach to play fetch with the right amount of training. After a busy day of playing, you’ll also love that these cats are incredibly affectionate and love cuddling on the sofa with their owners, so you really do get the best of both worlds!
