Introduction
Kanaani cats are a relatively new breed to the cat world and are classed as what is known as an experimental cat. Just by looking at this cat, you’ll immediately recognise the apparent wild nature of this breed, kind of similar to a leopard or cheetah, but this is, in fact, a fully domesticated breed. No wild cats at all! We think it’s still pretty cool they look like your typical ocelot or Savannah cats, though!
History
Despite being an experimental cat, these cats actually have a rather broad history. They originated in Isreal in the city of Jerusalem, and even the name Kanaani has religious, or more accurately ‘biblical’ connotations. They are officially named after the Canaan settlement they started out in. However, they were discovered by a Russian sculptor who took some and started breeding them in the early 1990s.
It took over ten years to get the resulting cat that they wanted, but here we are with the Kanaani cats we know and love today. Although the breed did originate in Israel, many claim Germany is the modern place of origin since this is where most of the breeding programs are located today!
Personality
Kanaanis are very kind and loving cats, but since they’re a new breed, you’ll need to look at the parents of the litter you’re buying from to see what kind of cat you’re going to get. However, some broad characteristics extend across the breed, like being fairly active cats and being very affectionate.
Kanaanis are known for having lots of bounding around energy and could not be called lazy. Their constant curiosity is also a driving force that makes them want to explore anywhere and everywhere, so if you’re able to satisfy this with lots of hidey places, you’re going to have a very happy cat.
