Introduction
The Himalayan breed is a special one. They are by far one of the most recognisable and iconic-looking breeds in the world, and while having a coat very similar to the Persian cats, the stunning blue eyes of the Siamese they’re bred with is the image that sticks in our minds. Adored by cat lovers and owners all over the world, these kind and affectionate cats are so talented when it comes to melting our hearts.
History
In the grand scheme of things, Himalayan cats are rather new to the breeding world. They first started to appear back in the early 1930s when breeders in the United States started to mix Siamese with Persian cats and thus created the Himalayan. However, it’s the efforts of UK breeders that really started to get things going properly.
It wasn’t until 1957 that official American and European cat breeding associations started to recognise the Himalayans as an official breed, although there are still plenty that have yet to make the move and sign this cat up. If you’re looking for one of these cats yourself, then expect to have to wait on the waitlist since breeding opportunities are fairly limited.
Personality
These Himalayan cats are like the majority of cats when it comes to living life. They like regular habits and routines that make life easy and aren’t super adaptable when it comes to change. If there are any big changes, such as a child joining your family or you move house, it can take a little while and a lot of love and encouragement to get your cat to settle in properly, but it’s nothing a lot of love won’t fix.
What’s more, the relationship you can have with your Himalayan cat is very strong. Your cat will change their mood depending on how you feel since they’re so empathetic, so if you’re prepared to put the time and energy in, it’s possible to have a relationship with your cat like nothing you’ve had before.
