Introduction
Highlander Shorthairs are a very similar breed to other Highland cats like the Scottish Fold and Highland Shorthair, but they are slightly different. To begin with, they come from breeding the Desert Lynx and Jungle Curl breeds, which is what gives these cats their beautifully unique look, which is clearly one of the main appeals to most cat owners. When you consider the loving personalities of these cats, they are close to perfect!
History
The Highlander first appeared back in 1993 when a breeder who went by the name of Joe Childers set himself the aim of breeding a cat that was as elegant and as beautiful as the domestic house cats we all know and love but had a unique ‘wild cat’ look that set them apart from the rest. The Highlander Shorthair was the result.
While bred using parent breeds named the Desert Lynx and Jungle Curl, it’s important to note that these breeds aren’t actually wild cats in the slightest, it’s purely a name given to their aesthetic and looks. After years of breeding, the cat was officially recognised in the US by 2004 and has started making its way around the world ever since.
Personality
Highlander Shorthairs are incredibly energetic cats that love nothing more than running around and playing with themselves, their toys, their owners, or other cats and pets. If you have young children that also want to play all the time, these could be the ideal cats for you! Since Highlander Shorthairs are also so intelligent, you can even teach them tricks like fetch, which makes playtime even more fun!
You may also be surprised to know that Highlander Shorthairs actually like being in water, so don’t be afraid to treat them to a bath time. They simply won’t mind. As an experienced cat owner, this can be a very surreal sight to experience!
