Introduction

To start with, it’s important to note that Highland Folds and Scottish Folds are not the same breeds, although they are practically identical and share many of the same features and personality traits. However, while pretty much the same in every way, the truth is that Highland Folds have longer hair than Scottish Folds, and that’s it. That’s all the differences. Don’t forget them.

Since they're so similar, there’s no denying that Highland Folds are incredibly adorable cats that look amazing and will melt your heart with their affectionate attitudes. There’s nothing here that’s not to love!

History

There are reports that date the Highland Fold cat back as far as 1796 when an English sailor bought a Fold cat back from an expedition to China. However, while genetically similar, these cats weren’t the Fold cats we know and love today, and it took a few decades of breeding to get to where they are today.

The cats we know originated in Perthshire, Scotland and have been around since 1961. Perhaps surprisingly, these cats are far more popular in other countries around the world, like the United States, than they are here in the UK, which means more breeding is taking place there than in their homeland.

Personality

Highland Folds are known for being incredibly affectionate and loving cats that will spend most of their lives calm and peaceful, following you around from room to room and nuzzling you in the way cats do, but they can get very cuddly when they feel like it. However, they will be the ones to choose when or where this happens.

That being said, these cats are also very playful and intelligent, meaning they respond well to challenges and games you play with them. It also doesn’t really matter where you live since these cats are very adaptable and easy to get along with!
