Introduction
There’s no denying the Colorpoint Shorthair is related to the iconic breed that is the Siamese cat. Anyone can tell that just from looks alone, and you’d be right. Colorpoint Shorthairs are simply Siamese cats but available in plenty of different colours, usually up to 16 in total, which makes for beautiful cats that are nothing short of a pleasure to lay your eyes on.
History
Siamese cats have been around for a very long time, but it wasn’t until the 1940s in both England and the United States where breeding started with the goal of producing Siamese cats in various colours, which led to the Colorpoint Shorthair breed coming around. In the Siamese breed, there are only four main colours available.
Over the decades, breeders have been very successful with their breeding efforts, especially when breeding Siamese cats with the American Shorthair, which is where most Colorpoint Shorthairs now come from. This particular breed was officially recognised in 1964, but it is still seen by many as a relative of the Siamese breed, not a separate breed entirely.
Personality
Colorpoint Shorthairs are very intelligent cats, much like their Siamese counterparts, and are very much people-orientated. They love spending time around their humans and being affectionate, so expect lots of head bumps, kisses, and cuddles. If cats had personality types (which they do), this one is very much extroverted.
However, while full of love, these cats aren’t fond of strangers and new environments they’re not used to, so they may get defensive, shy, and nervous if in a situation like this. Males have been known to be aggressive towards other animals as well, so bear this in mind if you have other pets!
