Easy to guess where the Ceylon cat hails from. This island is now part of the country called Sri Lanka although the breed has not changed its name. A medium-sized tough cat with a muscular frame, this breed has shorter front legs than hinds which is unusual. A small head features large, appealing eyes and the cat has a ticked tabby coat. The Ceylon is an adaptable cat, happy to be a hunter outside but also makes a good indoor cat as they are relatively calm as well.

The Ceylon originates from the island of Ceylon now part of Sri Lanka. Native only to their homeland, they didn’t appear in Europe until 1984 where some of the breed were exported to Milan by a vet, Paolo Pellegatta, on the authority of the Director of Colombo Zoo. Numbers of the Ceylon are very low in Italy and there are a handful in France.

Recognised by the International Feline Federation in 1983, the breed is hardly known outside its native island due to its isolation from the mainland. Cross-breeding is strictly forbidden.

The Ceylon cat is a unique blend of calm domesticity and playfulness so they can adapt really well to a busy household or equally thrive in a quieter environment just as long as they have plenty of toys to play with.

The Ceylon can be self-contained and independent at times. They are an intelligent breed and extremely sociable.
