Savvy and streetwise, the Brazilian Shorthair is a breed that developed from the population of cats that roamed the streets of towns in Brazil. Colourful and charismatic, they are appealing and easy to manage and make great pets in a variety of home environments. Sleek, elegant and agile, they have more body condition than the Siamese and are longer than they are tall with very expressive and appealing eyes.

The Brazilian Shorthair is the first cat breed from Brazil on the international stage. Known in its home country as Pelo Curto Brasileiro, this breed is the everyday cat, similar to the British Shorthair or the American Shorthair – one wouldn’t be so rude as to say ‘moggy’!

This breed is thought to date back around 500 years and originated from British Shorthair cats coming to Brazil on Portuguese ships, on board to help with vermin control. The breed received official recognition in 1998 but the actual credit goes to Paulo Samuel Ruschi, the founder of the Cat Federation in Brazil and the Cat Club in Rio de Janeiro. It took several years of controlled breeding to establish a recognised breed standard but the Brazilian Shorthair is now an approved breed. Due to their derivation, there are a huge range of colours available.

The Brazilian Shorthair has a confident street-style swagger and personality. Curious and bright, they adore socialising and being with people and are very affectionate. A naturally playful and extrovert nature means they make a great family pet and cope well with the hurly-burly of children but are equally content in a quieter home environment, just so long as they have some attention.
