Introduction
Known as the ‘Sacred Cat of Burma’, the Birman has a striking appearance with an appealing face that is actually triangular but is so broad it appears round and the most striking blue eyes. Known as colourpoint cats, the Birman is a large and muscular cat but with a docile and calm temperament. Legend dictates that the Birman cat is descended from Burmese temple cats who were cared for by the Kittah priests.
History
The Birman has an ancient ancestry so ancient that its exact origins have passed into legend and been lost in the mists of time. Legend has it that their beautiful fur and blue eyes were the gift from a Goddess. The Birman were temple cats and priests who passed away were said to come back as temple cats according to myth.
In the 1930s, there seal-point cats living in temple ruins in Burma and they were protected by the locals who believed in these legends. At round this time, the breed was recognised in France and then another four decades elapsed before it was officially accepted by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF).
Personality
The Birman is a docile breed and finds it easy to get along with everyone so can make an ideal pet in all types of households. They are very tolerant of children and other pets and also make a great companion for elderly people because they are calm and relaxed.
Birmans can be quite ‘one person’ cats and often tend to pick out one particular member of the household. They are not a noisy breed although the males are said to be more chatty than the females.
