Very closely related to its cousin, the Cornish Rex, the California is a new and niche breed which originated in America. They have a noticeable and very slender frame and often walk on the points of their feet which is where they have gained the nickname, ‘dancer’.

In frame, they look rather like a greyhound infused with ballerina and have a deep rib cage. The California Rex has a unique head shape with long cone-shaped ears and the distinctive wavy coat which comes with the Rex mutation.

The California Rex appeared in the States during the 1960s and was designed to be a medium-length coated version of the Cornish Rex; their fur is said to resemble the classic waved bob hairstyles of the 1920s.

Rare both for their appearance and because of their breed numbers, the name comes from the cat’s place of origin and the Rex mutation which results in a soft, curly fur seen in other animals like the Rex Rabbit. There are four internationally recognised feline Rex breeds which are the Cornish Rex, the Devon Rex, the LaPerm and the Selkirk Rex. The California Rex has yet to gain official recognition and is amongst some other niche Rex breeds in the States including the Oregon Rex and the Ohio Rex. They are rare and little known about.

Chatty, interactive and playful, the Californian Rex is an engaging member of the household with moderate exercise needs so they are suitable for a variety of different homes.

As a breed, they usually mix well with other cats and suitable cat-friendly dogs. They are intelligent and curious and can be taught basic tricks and commands.
