Introduction
The Burmilla is a member of the Asian cat breed group and has a stocky, muscular build with an appealing face and personality and the distinct advantage of being a non-hypoallergenic breed. Very attractive to look at and with a mild, docile manner, the Burmilla is famed for its jumping prowess and likes nothing better than a high perch. Charming and friendly, the Burmilla makes the most engaging companion.
History
It’s pretty easy to guess where this hybrid cross breed originated from – the clue is in the name. The Burmilla is the result of an accidental mating between a Chinchilla Persian and a Lilac Burmese which happened in 1981; the resultant kittens featured an unusual black-tipped colouring. They were so attractive the cross was picked up and repeated and a breeding programme began to produce a cat with the short, dense, silky coat of the Burmese and the striking colouring that this mix offered.
Even after forty years, the Burmilla remains a rare and niche breed however they are recognised by the European Federation Internationale Feline and the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) in the UK.
Personality
One of the best attributes of the Burmilla is that it combines the sweet characteristics of both the Burmese and the Persian to produce a gentle and affectionate cat with a playful and engaging character but a personality that is generally milder and more docile than the Burmese. The playful aspect of their character continues into adulthood.
As a breed, the Burmilla does adore human company but doesn’t demand it so they can be self-contained and don’t always require a busy household. Warm and friendly in nature, the Burmilla is easy to manage and suitable for lots of different types of home environment.
