Introduction
Tall and elegant with stunning blue eyes, the Siamese is one of the world’s most recognisable cat breeds. They thrive on human companionship and are highly-sociable, but as with most cats, they like life to be lived on their terms.
History
Believed to be one of the most ancient cat breeds, the Siamese is mentioned in scripts dating back to the 14th century. Named after their native land, Siam, known as Thailand today, they were revered as sacred cats and would be found guarding Buddhist temples. By the 19th century, the Siamese had been imported into England, and by the 20th century, breeders in the UK and US had developed a cat with a longer, more svelte body shape and a distinctly wedged or triangular-shaped head, giving the Modern Siamese a taller, sleeker, and more chiselled appearance than the “Old-Style Siamese” with less extreme features.
Personality
The Siamese likes to be given undivided attention at home, but in return, they are devoted to their people and very affectionate. Vocal by nature, Siamese cats are known as chatterboxes and will get into “conversations” about what’s going on in their day. Playful and outgoing, they prefer to have company at all times (feline or human) and don’t do well if left alone. Anyone “owned” by a Siamese will know that they can be demanding, loud, and easily upset by change, but as the “aristocrat of cats”, their regal charm remains irresistible to cat lovers the world over.
