Introduction
The Turkish Van has distinctive colouring now known as the “Van pattern” when it’s seen on other breeds, but they are perhaps equally well-known for their love of water. Sometimes nicknamed “the swimming cat”, they are famed for not only enjoying a splashy game around water but for actually taking a dip when the weather is hot.
History
The Turkish Van’s origins are unclear, but it’s thought that they are a centuries old natural breed from around the Lake Van region of Turkey. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the Turkish Van breed became established in name after two cats were taken from Turkey to the UK. Originally named the Turkish Cat, the name was changed to Turkish Van to distinguish it from the Turkish Angora breed.
Personality
Turkish Van cats enjoy human companionship and will follow their people around from room to room to keep an eye on everything that’s going on. They are friendly and intelligent, enjoying interactive games, but they can be a little more independent than some breeds, and don’t often look for a lap to sit on. Apart from their stunning appearance, another endearing feature is the Turkish Van’s soft meow, sometimes described as being lamb-like.
