Introduction

As its name suggests, the Toyger is a cat-sized tiger that has impressive “wild” markings, but a sweet nature that makes it a total pussycat. Lithe and athletic, they love to play dog-like games, but affectionate and kind by nature, they make super-snuggly companions whenever the mood takes them.

History

The Toyger’s ancestry dates back only as far as the 1980s. A breeder, who happened to be the daughter of the Bengal breed’s founder, bred a Bengal with a striped shorthair cat to begin developing a breed with striking “tiger” markings. By the 1990s, she had successfully bred a domestic cat that had wild tiger-like stripes and a temperament that made it an absolute joy to share a home with.

Personality

Confident and outgoing, the Toyger is a cat that often takes on dog-like behaviours such as greeting people at the door as they arrive home. They form strong bonds with their people and don’t do well if left on their own, but having another companion cat in the home can help. They are a very sociable breed and thrive on interactive games, and although they would ideally prefer to have access to their own outdoor “wilderness”, they can adapt to indoor life if they are given the attention and entertainment they need. High platforms are a particular favourite of the Toyger, and they’ll happily climb all day before looking for a warm spot on a lap to take a snooze.
