Introduction

The Sphynx certainly stands out in the cat world, not least for its hairless body, but also for its over-sized ears and often wrinkly face. Their looks are extraordinary, and they are also extraordinarily affectionate and people-oriented, making them fabulous companions for anyone with enough time to give them the attention they crave.

History

In the 1960s, a domestic Shorthair cat in Canada produced a litter of kittens that contained one without hair – promptly named Prune because of his wrinkly appearance. He and his mother became the beginning of a breeding programme to intentionally develop hairless cats, and the breed was named the Sphynx.

Personality

The Sphynx is renowned as an incredibly affectionate cat that loves nothing better than snuggling with its people at every opportunity. They are also very intelligent and almost dog-like in behaviour, greeting everyone that comes into their home at the door. For this reason, they need companionship and don’t do well if left alone. Always involved in what’s going on, and often quite vocal about what they’re doing, the Sphynx could be considered demanding, but they’re really quite relaxed about life provided there’s always someone or a companion animal around.

Care Tips Sphynx prefer constant company and care needs are greater than many furry cats. Grooming: the lack of body hair leads to oil accumulating on the skin, and this requires weekly bathing to remove. Ear wax also needs to be removed from their large ears regularly. Feeding: the Sphynx needs at least two meals each day and often more to help ensure they maintain their body temperature.
