Introduction

The Snowshoe is a gorgeous mix of American Shorthair build with Siamese colours and markings, creating a beautiful cat that really grabs attention. Not only do they look adorable, they have equally charming personalities, making them much-loved companions and family pets in homes lucky enough to have one.

History

The Snowshoe is a relatively recently developed breed that originated in North America in the 1960s. In a litter of Siamese kittens, three happened to be born with four white paws. This was very unusual, but very cute, and the breeder chose to deliberately continue breeding this white-pawed trait to establish a new breed that she named the Snowshoe. Shorthair cats with white paws and other white markings such as the inverted V on the nose and tuxedo-style bib on the chest were bred with Siamese to establish the appearance and markings associated with the Snowshoe cat today.

Personality

The Snowshoe is renowned as a highly-adaptable, laid-back character that takes life in its stride. They are very affectionate and tend to follow their people around, and therefore they prefer company to being left alone. Intelligent and playful, they like to play games, and they have been known to play dog-like games such as fetch. Like a Siamese, Snowshoes can be quite vocal, and they’re not shy about getting attention when they want it, but they make loving companions and pets and fill their home with joy.
