Introduction

The Modern Persian is a variation on the traditional Persian with more defined features that differentiate it more easily from breeds such as the Angora, however this change was accidental. A calm and refined breed these cats are happy to sit with their owners or lounge in a sunbeam.

History

In the 1950s a mutated gene made its way into the Persian population resulting in a much flatter face referred to as "peke-faced" as it looked similar to the Pekingese dog. This gene was more popular amongst show breeds and several cat fancier groups recognised this as a separate breed to the Traditional Persian. This didn't last long though as in the 1990s the breed began to fall out of favour as the breeds flat face developed conditions such as Brachycephaly which caused breathing issues, dental issues, and has a severe impact on the animals quality of life. Whilst in the show rings Modern Persians tend to do better, the public seems to be more in favour of Traditional Persians. With this in mind the UK Governing Council of the Cat Fanciers banned Modern Persians that had too extreme facial features.

Personality

Similar to their traditional counterparts they are relaxed and calm cats that don't vocalise an excessive amount. In spite of their calm nature they still need mental and physical stimulation to make sure they don't develop any boredom based behaviours. They are slow to anger and can deal well with children and other animals. However children should be taught how to properly interact with Modern Persian cats to reduce the risk of accidental injury and to make sure that these cats do not get excessively annoyed. Modern Persians are happy to play on their own or have interactive play with their owners. They are sweet and enjoy calm time with their owners and family members. Modern Persians are more than happy to rest in a warm sunbeam all day before having bursts of energy, before once again returning to their sunbeam.
