Introduction
The Exotic shorthair is a newish breed of cat that’s a typical crossbred between the Persian shorthair (for which it’s often confused) and the American Shorthair. These affectionate little moggies are incredibly human-friendly and love to spend actual active time with their human families, time which includes activities like playing games, cuddling on the sofa or floor, and just generally being in your company.
History
The first reports of Exotic shorthairs started to appear around the 1950s when a breeder in the US named Carolyn Bussy had the dream to create a brown Persian cat and so crossed a Persian shorthair with a Burmese. However, while the kittens were born black, they were absolutely adorable, and so the efforts to continue breeding commenced.
It wasn’t until 1967 when the Cat Fanciers Association officially recognised the Exotic shorthair as its own breed, and so the rise in popularity began and has continued ever since. Breeding of the American Shorthair and Burmese stopped around 1975 since there were so many Exotic shorthairs to choose from!
Personality
Exotic shorthairs are real people pleasers. They have super high affection levels, are incredibly friendly to their owners and strangers alike, great with kids and other pets and animals you may have, and really require next-to-no maintenance. All you need to do is give your cat some love, play and spend time with them, and that’s it. You’ll have a very happy cat.
