Introduction

There is absolutely no denying that the European Shorthair cat is the most common breed of cat in Europe and one of the oldest. When you’re asked to picture a standard cat you may see in someone’s home, this is the breed of cat you’re thinking of.

Widespread across most European countries, these cats have such a long history with humans, it should come as no surprise that their relationships with us are amazing, hence why they’re so popular as house cats!

History

There are clear records that date the European Shorthair cat back as far as the Roman Empire’s times, which was around 2,000 years ago. It was around here that the cats used to live in homes and on farms because they were so good at hunting animals and keeping rodent and vermin populations under control.

However, as time went on and lots of breeding took place, the breeds got a little confusing as they bred with other cats and changed slightly depending on which country they were in. At one point, they were even known as the Celtic Shorthairs, and it wasn’t until the 20th Century they were eventually recognised as a breed.

Personality

One of the best traits of the European Shorthair is the fact that they can be so incredibly adaptable to their environment. This is a great reason why they are so popular when it comes to households of all shapes and sizes. They can just fit in and get comfortable without too much hassle whatsoever. Once settled, these cats are also very playful, very affectionate, and a lot of fun to have around!
