Introduction

The Cyprus cat. With a long history that dates back thousands of years, it’s surprising that Cyprus cats are not as popular as you may think, especially for a breed that’s been around in human culture for such a long time. But that doesn’t mean they’re non-existent.

There are plenty of cat owners in the world who enjoy their Cyprus cat’s active and entertaining presence, who typically hold a lot of love for their high-energy approach to life and a low-maintenance lifestyle.

History

Cyprus cats date all the back into human history, and there’s evidence to suggest they existed back before the Egyptian cat breeds we typically know about existed, dating this breed as old as 4,000 years. As you can tell from the name, these cats appeared and lived on the island of Cyprus, which can be found in the Mediterranean.

It’s said that it was around the 4th Century when these cats were imported to the mainland by a Byzantine monastery to try and help keep the snake population under control, for which they did a fairly decent job and became known at the time for their hunting prowess.

Personality

There’s no denying that Cyprus cats are one of the most active and energetic cat breeds out there, and they must be kept as active as possible. This means you need a large house, garden, or living environment where the cat can explore and run around. It’s essential that they get daily exercise to stay happy and healthy.

If not, and these cats find themselves living a sedentary lifestyle, they can get agitated and stressed and may develop behavioural problems. What’s more, while these cats will stay near you a lot, they don’t particularly like being picked up or cuddled, which is what puts most people off.
