Introduction

Famously known as the cat without a tail, a Cymric is an incredibly affectionate cat with a lot of love to give. Known for being one of the oldest and most traditional cats globally, these beauties are often referred to as the longhaired versions of a Manx cat with very rounded features. Sweet in nature, kind, gentle, and very playful, if you’re looking for what some people call ‘the perfect family cat’, the Cymric could be it!

History

It’s common knowledge that the Cymric comes from the Manx breed of cats and originated on the Isle of Man in the UK, although the most known breeding programs nowadays occur in Canada. These first appeared on the scene back in 1750 and are said to have arrived on a ship that then bred with the cats that already existed on the island.

Because of the cat’s tailless feature, the Isle of Man became known for them, which is where the original Manx name came from. However, while these cats were always popular, the longhaired Cymric wasn’t really recognised by the CFA until 1994 and is now considered a separate breed.

Personality

Perhaps surprisingly, Cymric can actually be quite protective cats and have a tendency to be alert to and even grown at strange animals, pets, and even other humans, especially if anything is happening that’s out of the ordinary. However, as long as you’re relaxed and accepting of whatever it is, then your cat should calm down reasonably soon.

Aside from this, Cymrics are incredibly affectionate and adaptable and love nothing more than getting cosy with you, relaxing, and taking life easy. These clever cats also can learn simple tricks, including fetch!
