Introduction

The Burmese is a breed of cat that can be more like a dog, they will literally follow their owners from place to place like a loyal canine. Quite a rumbustious kitten, the Burmese matures into a docile and placid cat. This is one beautiful breed, the Thoroughbred of the cat world with an athletic profile and graceful movement.

The Burmese is noted for its beautiful dark brown sable coat but is available in a wide variety of colours. Exactly which colour is recognised depends upon the individual breed societies so there is some variation.

History

The Burmese became a prominent breed outside its home country of Burman (now Myanmar) when a sole cat found its way to the States in 1930. People were sceptical that this cat was a Burmese and described it just as a very dark Siamese, however the man that imported this female cat stuck to his guns and developed the breed through selective breeding programmes.

After the Second World War, the Burmese became more popular in its own right but hybrids started to appear and this cross breeding affected the purity of the Burmese and was in contravention of the rules of the Cat Fanciers’ Association. They withdrew the formal status of the breed until 1953.

Britain and the US have distinctly different breed standards with the British type commonly called the European Burmese. This is one of the unique features of the Burmese; most breed associations have more universal standards across different countries.

Personality

A vocal breed due to their partly Siamese ancestry, the Burmese is a friendly and happy cat with an intelligent personality that loves the company of people. Curious, sociable and attention-seeking, the Burmese makes a great family pet and loyal companion.
