Introduction

The Yorkie Russell is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Jack Russell Terrier, creating a spirited, energetic, and cute small dog. If you’re looking for an affectionate, charming, and entertaining companion, this breed could be ideal for you, but if you’d prefer a quiet, independent dog that sleeps peacefully on the couch all day, a Yorkie Russell is definitely not for you.

History

The Yorkie Russell’s origins are unknown, but like other “designer dogs” and popular hybrids, the first intentional mix was most likely in the 1990s and in North America, although it’s a combination of breeds that no doubt existed in mongrels previously. Both the Yorkshire Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier have origins dating back to the 1800s in England, and both breeds were originally developed as working dogs – the Yorkie as a ratter and the Jack Russell to assist foxhounds.

Personality

Yorkie Russells are small, cute, energetic, and full of fun. They are loving and devoted, but also a little wilful and fearless at times, meaning they can be tricky to train. They’re super friendly towards people, but they are prone to barking and will let you know when anyone is approaching the house. After a busy day of being the centre of attention, a Yorkie Russell will snuggle up on any available lap – or attempt to hijack your bed.

Care Tips Yorkie Russells are relatively low maintenance, depending on the type of coat they’ve inherited. Grooming: a twice-weekly brush is generally enough to keep tangles at bay, but longer coats will need daily grooming and regular trimming. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: 45 minutes of exercise each day should be enough to keep this energetic breed happy, but opportunities to run, jump, and play in a secure garden on top of twice daily walks will keep this potentially mischievous dog out of trouble.
