Introduction
The Weimaraner is an attractive and very intelligent breed, prized in their native land as hunting dogs and favoured as companions and family pets in active households all over the world. They are best suited to countryside homes, but can adapt to city life provided they get plenty of exercise.
History
The exact origins of the Weimaraner remain a mystery, but dogs of a similar appearance feature in paintings dating back to the 17th century. Developed for their hunting skills, it’s believed the breed’s ancestors may be linked to German Short-haired Pointers and possibly Bloodhounds crossed with Schweisshund breeds. Favoured by nobility (including the Grand Duke of Weimar), they were used to track down deer, bears, wolves, and mountain lions on hunting trips.
Personality
Weimaraners are known as dogs that become devoted to their people and will follow them around wherever they go. For this reason, they don’t do well if left alone. Extremely intelligent and trustworthy, they learn quickly, and this coupled with their good temperament has seen many excel in roles as police dogs and assistance dogs. With huge amounts of stamina, they need a home with plenty of time and space for exercise.

Exercise: a daily minimum of two hours of exercise is needed for this high-energy breed, ideally off the lead as much as possible in a safe environment. Mental stimulation and playful interaction will help keep these intelligent dogs calm and settled at home. |
