Introduction

The Samoyed is a breed beloved of nobles and European royalty and has had royal status bestowed on them. Used during expeditions to the Arctic and the North Pole including Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous polar expedition, the breed was favoured over - not a very well known fact - because the Samoyed has a more tractable temperament.

Known as the ‘Sammy smile’ the Samoyed has slightly upturned corners on the edge of the mouth. The Sammy smile reflects their happy attitude towards life. The Samoyed has an immensely thick white coat so is only a good choice of dog for people who like grooming. Their wool is a favourite of weavers and can be carded, spun and woven into clothing.

History

Named after the Samoyede people, the Samoyed dog is an ancient breed that lived with these Asiatic Nomadic tribes. It is suggested that the dogs moved with them to North America where they pulled sledges and guarded reindeer.

The Russians saw the benefit of these dogs whilst they were travelling through Siberia and they became a working dog for hunters and fishermen on the Taimyr Peninsula. They even slept with their owners to keep them warm in freezing temperatures because their thick double coat provided softness and heat.

The Samoyed was brought to England in 1889 by Robert Scott, an explorer, and from that point, their popularity increased across the globe. Twelve founding dogs form the core of this breed and the breed standard was adopted in England in 1909.

Personality

The Samoyed is loving, friendly and playful and adores the great outdoors so would suit a rural home where there is plenty of space to let off steam. They are a vocal breed so near neighbours may not appreciate this. They do have an independent streak and are perhaps best suited to more experienced dog owners.
