Introduction

A German breed, the Miniature Pinscher has always been valued for its looks, unusual and distinctive high-stepping gait and incredibly loyal nature. Sociable, curious and engaging, the Miniature Pinscher offers plenty of wag for your tail, a pint-sized dog that packs a punch. Often confused as being a mini version of the Doberman Pinscher due to the similarity in name, these two breeds are not connected at all.

The Miniature Pinscher is an active breed despite its diminutive size and needs plenty of exercise and stimulation – a busy household is perfect. They are tractable and easy to train despite their eagerness.

History

The Miniature Pinscher can trace its lineage back to the 16th century and was originally bred as a working dog. Don’t be put off by their size – their equivalent would be an English terrier breed who were also used to control vermin.

People speculate about the origin of the word ‘Pinscher’ with theories suggesting that this derives from the way they kill their prey but there is no definitive answer to this. Popular in Germany for centuries, they declined hugely in the early years of the 20th century mainly due to the two world wars. The breed has been saved by enthusiasts but is still quite rare and so expect to join a waiting list if you want a puppy.

Personality

Known affectionately as the Min Pin, this charming dog is a bundle of personality and energy – think of the Miniature Pinscher as a German version of the English terrier. This very engaging breed have a vibrancy, zest for life and outlook that many larger dogs lack.

Miniature Pinschers have tractable natures despite their quickness and bright personalities and are reasonably easy to train and socialise if you put the work in at the puppy stage.
