The breed originally comes from County Kerry, in the South West of Ireland. Historically, they have been used to hunt smaller animals that would have interfered with farm life (including small game or rodents).

This love of being athletic and the intelligence required for this working life are traits which can still be seen in Kerry Blue Terriers, whether living at home or on a farm.

Their intelligence is a joy for their owners. Couple this with their sense of fun, energy, love of being outside, chasing, digging and generally running about, you’ve got to have plenty of spare time to exercise them.

They also have a firm sense of loyalty, and are often highly devoted to their owners. The downside of this is that they shouldn't be left alone for extensive periods.

They adore humans, and are always happy to say hello to people. However, these impressive social skills don’t always apply to other dogs. They have a tendency to dash off after small animals (unsurprisingly, when you consider their background), and can be aggressive towards other dogs. As a result, they usually prefer being the only dog in the home.
