Introduction

It’s suggested that the Curly Coated Retriever is one of the older, most original Retriever breeds that are still around today, although popularity has certainly dropped over recent years for the more common golden breeds. Nevertheless, Curly Coated Retrievers are still wonderful pets to have, especially if you’re interested in owning a show dog that’s agile and highly intelligent. They also make for beautiful family dogs!

History

The factual origins of the Curly Coated Retriever dog are relatively unknown but there are plenty of estimates out there that claim they first appeared in the UK around the year 1860 when they were used for retrieving hunted game (as their name suggests). Nearly all retriever breeds have been great hunters and working dogs over the years, traits that still remain instinct to this day.

Curly Coated Retrievers started gaining popularity throughout the 1900s, and were exported to the US around 1907 and were officially registered with the AKC in 1924. While not the most popular retriever breed, there’s certainly a lot of love out there for them.

Personality

Curly Coated Retrievers can be very emotional dogs, and while their default is being kind and affectionate, they can get nervous, alert, and very determined if they get an idea in their head. They can also get very apprehensive around strangers, which is why socialisation training from a young age is absolutely essential.

Due to the working nature of this dog, you’ll also need to make sure you’re exercising your pup daily to keep them happy and healthy as well as playing games to mentally stimulate them because they are incredibly intelligent. Sure, this might all sound like a lot of work, but in true Retriever fashion, there are few dogs that have as much love to give.
