Introduction

Famous for being the Royal Dog of Madagascar, Coton De Tulears have been around for a long time, and are renowned for their purebred companionship role that helps these dogs connect with their human owners in ways few other dogs can. Over the recent years, these pups have sprung up in popularity for their charm and affectionate attitudes, making them ideal family pets that everyone can love.

History

The history of Madagascar’s royal dog is extensive, with reports indicating they’ve been around since the 1600s when they lived on the island of Tula, for which they get their name. The story states that these dogs were then taken to Madagascar by pirates and had the job of cleaning up rats and mice who lived on the ships.

However, the dogs were left on Madagascar after the ships had gone, and soon became the dog of choice for the royals. The ‘Coton’ part of their name comes from the fact their soft, fluffy white coats resemble cotton. Eventually, the breed was officially recognised by kennel clubs in 1990.

Personality

Coton De Tulears are companion breeds through and through, and literally love being around their families. In fact, they love company so much that you can’t leave them alone for too long since they’ll become very anxious through separation problems. This can result in destructive outbursts and lots of barking, so make sure you’re bearing this in mind.

However, due to their loving nature and easy to train attitudes, these are great dogs for first-time dog owners, and will happily be around children and other pets. The more socially you can train your Coton De Tulear to be, the happier it will be around other people.
