As you can probably tell by the name, the Catalan Sheepdog is a dog with Spanish origins that have been popularly bred for centuries as working dogs, but have always been a top choice when it comes to being a human companionship pet. Catalan Sheepdogs have been around in human history for centuries, but there is surprisingly little known about their origins. They are specifically a crossbreed of the native Pyrenees and Catalan dogs mixed with some Roman breed of dogs (yeah, we’re going back centuries there), but have mainly been found in Spain, which is where they get their name.

,p>Due to the dog’s incredible intelligence, they were always used in farm work, whether they’re herding or guarding flocks, but were even used during the Spanish Civil War as messengers. Sadly, like many European breeds, their numbers dropped during World War II when resources were limited, but they have bounced back entirely thanks to being a favoured breed among breeders.

Catalan Sheepdogs are, hand’s down, one of the most versatile dog breeds out there, and it really doesn’t matter whether you’re living in an apartment or a country estate, the small size of these dogs makes them very adaptable. As long as you’re giving them attention and enough exercise, they’re also going to be very happy.

However, due to their high-octane nature, you will need to make sure you’re training your dog correctly, especially when it comes to socialising them. While they will be wary of strangers and other dogs, Catalan Sheepdogs aren’t known for being aggressive, meaning these are fantastically passive dogs that only have love to give!
