Introduction

The Bouvier Des Flandres breed has been around for centuries, and has always been known as being one of the hardest working dog breeds. Traditionally, they would be used for herding cattle around ranches and farms, and for using their strength whenever it was needed.

However, as time has moved on, Bouvier Des Flandres have found their way in normal residential living where they love spending time with their humans in a happy and relaxing family setting. If you ask us, after the decades of service they’ve given, it’s about time!

History

Records of Bouvier Des Flandres date back as far as the early 1600s and can be found throughout Belgium, but also in some areas of Northern France. As we said above, these pups were mainly used on farms to herd cows and pull farm tools around whenever the need arose.

Sadly, the breed was almost wiped out during the First World War when most of the land in Belgium was destroyed, but we’re so glad they managed to survive and repopulated in numbers. Nowadays, Bouvier Des Flandres are still used as working dogs in some parts of the world, but usually within the ranks of emergency services like fire services and police departments.

Personality

Bouvier Des Flandres are renowned for being one the boldest dog breeds out there. They are incredibly intelligent, and while traditionally independent, they do need a lot of attention. Due to their pack mentality, they are also very protective, which means socialization training is needed from a young age to make sure they integrate properly. If you want an intimidating guard dog, Bouvier Des Flandres are a safe bet.

This degree of training should take place between the ages of 0 to three years old, which is when they develop their emotional intelligence, but they should be no problem around children at any age. It’s only due to their size that they might play a little rough, so supervision is always recommended.
