Introduction

This playful furball is a member of the Bichon family, which includes the Havanese and the Maltese. They are best at providing their owner with love and attention and are much more suited to lounging at home than they are to the working life! Some good news for allergy sufferers is that they barely shed hair, so you won’t get the urge to sneeze every time you approach one!

Fun Fact: This pooch is famously loved by high profile celebrities, as Marilyn Monroe owned a Bolognese, as did Catherine the Great in the 18th century!

History

The precise ancestry of the Bolognese isn’t very clear, but we do know that they originated in the Italian city Bologna, hence the name. They were a very regal dog, and they were often seen wandering around the Ducal Courts of Italy. Sadly, once the noble classes started dying out, the breed almost followed in their footsteps. There is evidence of the Bolognese existing as early as the middle ages, but they didn’t touch English soil until 1989 when a breeder called Liz Stannard chose to import them. They are still a relatively rare breed in the UK, but they are becoming an increasingly popular household pet with no risk of extinction.

Personality

If you want a playful dog who thinks the world of you, then the Bolognese is perfect for you. They adore their owners and often follow them from room to room, trying to get involved in everything they do. They don’t demand too much maintenance either, so they are well suited to the elderly and for those who live in an apartment. It is important to begin socialising them as early as possible, as they have a stubborn streak. They are also wary of strangers and tend to bark at them. This makes them an ideal watchdog!
