Introduction

This little bundle of fluff is one of four Barbicon types. The Maltese, Havenese and Bolognese are all close relatives of the Bichon Frise. If you are a first-time dog owner, this may be the breed for you, as they are constantly cheerful and don’t demand a lot of maintenance.

Fun Fact: European ruling elites adored Bichon Frises, and the breed features in multiple 16th-century paintings alongside Renaissance royalty!

History

The Bichon Frise is no stranger to travel. In the Renaissance period, countries often exchanged the breed for other goods. Because there are records of the dog in France, Germany, and Belgium, there is uncertainty over its exact origin. However, the most common consensus is that they came from the Canary Islands of Spain.

One of the best features of this dog is its eagerness to please and obey its owner. From working as a water dog retriever in Spain to being a lapdog to the Italian nobility and even performing in circuses with travellers, the Bichon Frise will do just about anything to make its human happy! Previously, it was known as either the ‘Bichon’ or the ‘Tenerife’ - in 1933, the breed standard officially named it the Bichon Frise, meaning curly-haired dog.

Personality

Happy, obedient and energetic, the Bichon Frise makes the perfect companion pet. As long as you take them out on regular walks, they will reward you with plenty of affection. They adore their owners and can be territorial or jealous if another pet takes hogs their attention! Whilst it's natural to cuddle your pooch and give it lots of treats, don’t overindulge them, or they will develop a spoilt streak!
