Introduction

Relatively unknown outside of its homeland, the Beauceron is a popular choice of pet in French households. They are admired for their gentle and intelligent temperament and are considered both a companion and working dog. From herding and protecting sheep to sniffing out landmines, this pooch fits the definition of adaptable perfectly!

A common nickname for this canine is ‘bas rouge’ (translated to red stockings) because of its unique red legs.

History

Originally bred to herd and to protect sheep from wolves, the Beauceron is also skilled at detection work. They are France’s largest sheepdog and are adapted to lots of different roles. Despite this, they remain one of the purest breeds in existence. It is rare for a pooches' characteristics not to dilute over time from mixing with other dogs, but the Beauceron has managed to do precisely that.

The first historical record of this pooch is in a 16th-century manuscript, however, the breed wasn’t recognised until the late 1800s when the breed standard was formed. Pierre Megnin distinguished the Beauceron from the Shepherd of the Brie. They have a significant military history, as they worked as messenger dogs on the frontline in both world wars.

Personality

If you are considering purchasing a Beauceron, don’t be put off by their working history. They are not an aggressive breed and are surprisingly gentle and affectionate, especially with children. Eager to please and happy to learn tricks, this pooch will shower its human family with unconditional love. However, if you are a novice to owning a dog then a Beauceron might not be the best choice. Without expert training, they will not bow down to you and will assert dominance. They need an owner who understands their personality and can train them effectively.
