Introduction

This uniquely British breed of Spaniel is one of the UK’s oldest native breeds, and currently a vulnerable breed. Slightly heavier and lower to the ground than other Spaniels, they are accomplished working dogs, popular with judges in showrings, and cherished family pets and companions.

History

The Sussex Spaniel’s origins go back to the 1800s in Sussex where they were bred for over 50 years by a landowner in the county. By the 1940s, numbers had dropped dangerously low and the breed almost vanished, but thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts, the Sussex Spaniel was saved from extinction and numbers are now gradually increasing.

Personality

Distinguishable by its unique golden liver-coloured coat and charming face that has a permanent furrowed brow expression, the Sussex Spaniel is a kind-natured and laid-back dog that’s always eager to please and happy in its “work”, whether that’s retrieving game out in the field or fetching your slippers at home. Known for their exceptionally waggy tails, they are calmer in character than other Spaniel breeds, thriving in an active family environment and making wonderful companions.

Health Issues Sussex Spaniels are known to suffer certain hereditary conditions including hip dysplasia, PFK, and skin complaints.
Care Tips Sussex Spaniels are relatively high maintenance, and exercise needs are high. Grooming: daily brushing is needed to keep tangles and knots in check, and to remove dirt that gets caught in their coat. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: a minimum of two hours of exercise is needed daily, with as much time off the lead as possible. A country environment is best for this breed, but they can adapt to roaming around in a secure garden if they are taken on two lengthy walks each day and given plenty of play and interaction time.
