There were originally two lines of the Small Munsterlander however there were no breed specific outlines. In nineteen-twelve the Club for Small Munsterlander Pointing Dogs was formed and by the end of the nineteenth century the German hunting organisations had developed regulations for these types of dogs in Germany. Since then the Small Munsterlander has remained popular in Germany and around the world.

As an intelligent breed the Small Munsterlander can be trained a large variety of tricks in a short amount of time. They are intelligent, affectionate, and self-confident and make great family pets. However, they are better for families with older children as younger children may not be able to keep up with the Small Munsterlanders energy and exuberance. Supervision when they are playing with children is always important.
