One of the latest in a long line of designer crossbreeds, the Puggle is a mix between a Pug and a Beagle. Also known rather affectionately known as the ‘Bug’ or the ‘Buggle’, this hybrid has been around since about 2000 in decent numbers. They have the wrinkles of the Pug and the longer nose and ears of the Beagle and some people think they look like miniature Mastiffs.

One great advantage is that the influence of the Beagle lengthens the Pug nose and so helps to combat the breathing issues which this breed has historically suffered from. The mix is quite strict, the Pug must be the male and the Beagle the female, not the other way around as otherwise the puppies are too large for the female to deliver successfully.

Created by a man named Wallace Havens in the 1980s in Wisconsin in the States, he was the first to register the dog with the American Canine Hybrid Club. The cross was supposedly accidental but has since grown hugely in popularity since that first early mistake.

The Puggle lacks the apathy of the Pug so is quite an energetic dog and also pretty smart and intelligent. However, some Puggles will inherit the trademark Pug stubbornness but generally, they are sweet and playful people-lovers and make great family pets once you have tackled the early training. Neither the Beagle nor the Pug has a great reputation for being the easiest breeds to train.

Puggles are not always suitable for cramped urban environments as they can inherit the howling trait from the Beagle parent and may be quite noisy.
