This lovable English breed was made never more popular than as the Dulux dog in all those famous television advertisements. Loyal, kind and affectionate, the Old English Sheepdog is instantly recognisable with their long coats and hairy faces. They make fantastic pets and are popular the world over.

Like many old breeds, the exact roots of this distinctive and unique dog have been lost in the mists of time although the story goes that the breed started in the south-west of England. The breed was a droving dog, used to herd sheep and cattle.

Rather ironically, the Old English Sheepdog did not become prominent until it travelled to America in the late 1880s and the breed society was found a few years later in 1904. The Old English Sheepdog became something of a status symbol in America in the early 20th century.

The breed remains popular on both sides of the Atlantic but it is a high-maintenance animal with a long shedding coat and plenty of drool so it has always had limited appeal although a dedicated fan base amongst its loyal owners.

Easy going and bumbling are two words that describe this kind and affable canine character. What these dogs lack in challenging personalities they more than make up for in coat maintenance – expect hours of grooming!

The Old English Sheepdog is an intelligent breed and surprisingly athletic. Biddable and easy to train, they adapt well to all types of home environment providing they have enough exercise and company.
