Introduction

Tiny and adorable, it doesn’t take much guessing to work out the breeds behind the designer, Morkie, the Yorkshire Terrier and the Maltese, two of the most popular dogs combined.

Both these breeds are lovely characters and personalities; they are small, energetic and full of fun. They love the hustle and bustle of family life but are a good dog for a one on one situation as well and a great introduction for first-time dog owners.

History

The Morkie takes its history from two long-established and very popular breeds but as a new breed does not yet have official recognition from any of the main canine organisations like The Kennel Club.

The breed originated in the United States around twenty years ago and is the original designer lapdog. The remit was to create a non-shedding breed so safe for people with allergies, small in size and registering 100% on the cuteness scale. This they seem to have achieved.

Most cross-breeds favour one parent more than the other so won’t usually be a 50:50 split. The two foundation breeds, the Maltese and the Yorkshire Terrier both have long histories and established breeds standards and traits. If you are opting for a Morkie, it is important that the puppy comes from parents who are both excellent examples of their breeds, with good conformation, free from hereditary defects and with kind stable temperaments.

Personality

Morkies might be cute but they are also fearless and don’t know their own size – just don’t overlook the influence of the Yorkshire terrier. They might be determined but they are quite a fragile dog in terms of size and don’t always do so well in a family with small children as they can be vulnerable. However, they do love to play and adore interaction with people.
