Malti-Poms are a first cross between the Maltese and the Pomeranian and combine the best characteristics of both these popular and well-known breeds. They are a very loving dog and are never happier than when curled up with the family at home or involved in some fun activity.

The Malti-Pom is a relatively new cross-breed and has only been about for around thirty years although the two foundation breeds are much older and well-established.

As a new designer breed, it is going to be sometime before the Malti-Pom really defines itself with an exact breed standard. Right now, this delightful little dog just combines the best of both the Pomeranian and the Maltese. It is also supposedly one of the new hypoallergenic breeds so is a great pet if there are allergy sufferers in the household.

A puppy may follow one parent breed more than the other so some will look more like Pomeranians whereas others will more closely resemble the Maltese.

Most cross-breeds are not a 50/50 split and will generally inherit more of one parent’s physical attributes and character than the other. The most important thing is that both parents are good examples of their breeds and with good temperaments; this rule applies to true type breeding but is especially important with cross-breeds.

The Malti-Pom is a happy cheerful dog who adores people and gets on really well with children so is a great addition to the family and a good choice for first-time dog owners. They do have a reputation of being a little sharp with other dogs but early socialisation and good puppy training can manage this trait very effectively.
