Introduction

Leonbergers are giant dogs, with a personality to match. They are fun, joyful and playful, with an abundance of happy energy.

As you’d expect from a dog of this size, they need a whole lot of exercise. This and their tendency to get mucky and bring mess indoors means that they’re not the right choice for any timid and clean owner, with a tidy white flat.

But, if you’re boisterous and outdoors, a Leonberger would be an absolute friend for life, no question. They are full of personality, and form strong, devoted bonds - you two can get up to all sorts of adventures together.

Did you know? Leonbergers make extraordinary guard dogs. Their bark is deep and loud, and they’re renowned for being especially protective. There’s no way any burglar would take any chances with a home that has a Leonberger as a pet.

History

Leonbergers originate from Germany.

The Leonberger breed comes from the breeding combination of Newfoundlands with Great Pyrenees, and long-haired St Bernards.

The result is a gorgeous, giant, long-haired dog which enjoys getting mucky on an outdoor adventure.

Personality

You may not expect it from such a large dog, but Leonbergers can really enjoy being in a house with other pets. It requires early and careful socialisation on the part of the owner, but these dogs can be very well-behaved around other animals.

Leonbergers like to live like their ancestors in many ways. First and foremost, however, is their love of feeling like they are part of a pack. If you treat them with respect, firmness and lots of love, they’ll be delighted to form a close-knit pack with you.
