Introduction

The Jack Russell terrier is a spirited, energetic, and clever small dog. If you’re looking for an affectionate, charming exercise companion, this breed could be ideal for you, but if you’d prefer a dog that sleeps peacefully on the couch all day, a Jack Russell is definitely not for you.

History

Developed in England in the 1800s, the Jack Russell terrier (aka Parson Russell terrier) is a true working terrier. The breed’s name relates to Parson John Russell (known as Jack) who wanted to create an efficient hunting dog to assist foxhounds.

Personality

Jack Russell terriers are small, cute, energetic, and full of fun. They are loving and devoted, but also very intelligent, wilful, and fearless, meaning they can be tricky to train. They’re super friendly towards people, but they can be aggressive towards other animals, and their natural drive to bark, chase, and dig means they need plenty of exercise to prevent them from looking for mischief.

Health Issues Jack Russell terriers are generally a healthy breed, but conditions they may be susceptible to include Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (a deformity of the hip joint that can affect small breeds) and patellar luxation.
Care Tips Jack Russell terriers are relatively low maintenance. Grooming: a weekly once-over with a brush and an occasional bath. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: 45 minutes of vigorous exercise each day should be a minimum, with opportunities to run, jump, and play. Jack Russell terriers are high-energy dogs, making them ideal jogging companions. Where access to free play is unavailable (they are tenacious and ingenious escapologists!) several daily walks will be needed to burn off energy and to keep this mischievous dog out of trouble.
