The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed that may have ancestry dating back to 7000 BC. It’s former name of “Cu” in old Irish translates as Irish hound, wolf dog, or war dog, and they’re mentioned in ancient Irish texts that were written in the 5th century. As prized hunting dogs, owning one depended on your status, and kings would gift them to nobles and rulers of other nations. After wolves were eradicated in Ireland in the 1700s, the Irish Wolfhound began finding its place as a companion dog in family homes.

Friendly, calm, and gentle-natured, the Irish Wolfhound is a loyal and loving family pet in any home that’s big enough to accommodate its size. Although athletic, they’re not energetic dogs, and provided they’re given an appropriate amount of daily exercise, they’ll happily fit into family life and adapt to whatever is going on. They are too friendly to be effective as guard dogs, but their natural hunting instinct can make life challenging for cats and other small animals. As a people-oriented breed, they don’t do well if left alone.
